Melina Romano's Casa 05 Portinari at CASACOR São Paulo 2024: a sand-toned house of slatted timber screens, a white grid ceiling and pale stone, with a dry tree standing in the middle of the plan.
The house works in one tone, sand, and changes it only through texture. Timber slats screen the windows and the bedroom, a white grid ceiling lights the open plan, and a tiled kitchen island echoes the slats in ceramic.
At the centre stands a bare branching tree, which the pictures use as a landmark: seen from the dining table, past a column, from the bath. It holds the open plan together the way a courtyard would.
Most frames are portrait, built for height. The light is kept low and even, so the sand tones separate into wood, stone and fabric rather than one beige.
