A backdrop test for Uber Eats Mexico: the same sliders with fried chicken and fries, and the same fried sushi rolls, re-staged on slate, pale and rustic wood, red boards, beige linen and a two-tone colour block.
On a delivery app the dish is fixed and the restaurant rarely reshoots it. What can change is the ground under it. This test holds the food constant, two sliders with fried chicken and fries, a fried roll cut into rounds, and swaps everything else.
Dark slate under a hard top light. Pale wood with a bamboo mat and a steamer basket. White boards with chopsticks on a rest. Red-painted planks. Weathered grey wood. A diagonal split of mustard and teal. Each shifts the price a diner imagines before they read the menu.
Set side by side, the frames make the case for a background system: a family of surfaces dealt across a menu, so a city's restaurants look considered without looking identical. The repetition is the point, and the test is how the right family gets chosen.
